Patty Hits Back with Amazing Images to Win Inauguaral OFSC Surf Photography Competition

In an awesome display of steely resolve, coming back from being slighted by The Advocate when they infringed his copy rights, mastersurfphotographer Patti has won the inaugural Old Farts Surf Co. Surf Photography Competition.  Head Judge & Jury, The Mexican, commented that "Patti had captured the essence of oldfartsurfing in a competitive environment with his series of photos taken at the recent West Coast Classic 2012 at Marrawah."  "Awesome " was all Patti could say when receiving the award at the red carpet gala awards night.  Old Farts Surf Co. Head Honcho, The Mexican said that in his opinion int he future The Advocate would have to pay four times what they paid for the original photo of teenage surfing sensation Zoe Gray winning the Women's division for the third time.
The following are a few selected photos from Patti's series titled "the essence of oldfartsurfing in a  competitive environment."

Stylish Dan

For those fortunate enough to have a copy of the highly sought after Old Farts Surf Co. 2012 Calender you may want to remember to turn the page to April for the feature photo of Stylish Dan.
Son of Oldfartsurfer No. 23, Macho, as a young teenager, Dan is already showing attributes of his old man's style.  Taken last April at the Old Farts Surf Co. 2011 Easter Classic, the photo shows Dan in the perfect crouch position developed by Macho gliding his old man's Mal a glassy point wave.  Notice the board placement in the speed slot of the wave, the leading forearm, and the alignment of the trailing elbow and knee.  In addition to being an evolving soul surfer, Dan is also a budding musician pumping some original music out of the "pickers hut" with his young mates.  This will not be the last time you have heard of Stylish Dan as according to Old Farts Surf co. Head Honcho, The Mexican, "age is no barrier to being an oldfartsurfer, its a deeply spiritual thing, and Dan's style is ageless"

Storm Brewing over Surf Photo Copyright

It was fantastic to read on the back page of the North West Tasmanian local paper, The Advocate, that local surfer Zoe Grey won the 37th annual Rip Curl West Coast Classic at Marrawah for a record third consecutive year.  Not a bad effort for a 16 year old!    The back page  even had a top photo of her ripping a backhand re-entry with style and aplomb.
(The back page of The Advocate featuring Zoe)
However, according to Old Farts Surf Co. Head Honcho, The Mexican (OFSC No. 4),  not so fantastic was the absence of credit given to the photographer for his fantastic shot.  "Known for its progressive style and ground breaking local journalism, The Advocate really let themselves down on this one" said Mex.  "The photographer was Zoe's main dude and masteroldfartsurfphotographer, Paddy, son of Oldfartsurfer No. 16, and he's my nephew."
(The photo of Zoe without a credit of photographer Paddy)
Recently returned from his photographic tour of Europe, Paddy said "I was quietly peeved at the lack of credit, however, I realised that those who know who took the photo know who took the photo, and they are the important people to me".  Speaking with Zen like wisdom, Paddy went on to say "I will learn from this."
The Old Farts Surf Co. supports the moral and copyrights of surf photographers around the world.

Wave Hog

Ol' Pete is a true surf aficionado, known around the beaches for his white beard, white hat and marathon surf sessions.  A couple of years ago, as he was re-acquainting himself with the pleasures of oldfartsurfing, he travelled up the coast took a series of photos during some solid swells.
Hearing a rumour of the existence of a set of quality photos, the Oldfartsurfer had been nagging Ol' Pete for copies.  Finally, while chewing the fat out the back at a local beachy a couple of weeks ago, the Oldfartsurfer asked Ol' Pete "Do you reckon you could send me those photos you've bee talking about?"  "Sure" said Ol' Pete and the photos were delivered by disk to the Oldfartsurfer's sponsor's office within a couple of days. The amazing set of photos were shown to Oldfartsurfer No. 42, Rockhead, who just happens to work for the sponsor.
Rockhead noticed a few photos of an oldfartsurfer tearing up a classic rivermouth that only breaks a few times a year.  "I know that dude" said Rock, "he's a member of the Wild Hogs".  Now Rockhead is torn between his allegiances to oldfartsurfing and the renegade Wild Hogs, who both surf and ride motorbikes built for geriatrics, but he was delighted to see the quite anonymous appearance of his Wild hog mate amongst Ol' Pete's photos.
The Oldfartsurfer undertook to publish the photos in this blog and asked Rockhead for his Wild Hog mate's name.  "Wave Hog we call him" said Rock

Spot's Air at the Quicksilver Pro in Coolangatta

Spot (Original Oldfartsurfer No. 6) has become an accomplished olfartsurfphotographer.  His early works presented youthful artistic passion through a lens of travel photojournalism.  More recently his work has been influenced by the spontaneity and freedom of expression of the great surfphotojournalists such as the Mexican, Stu Gibson and the late Peter Crawford.

These two photos taken at the recent Quicksilver Pro in at Snapper Rocks show the quality and professionalism of Spot's work. According to Spot "the secret to these photos was superior positioning on the rocks".  "I outmaneuvered the Mexican (Original Oldfartsurfer No. 4) who could only get back of head shots" spot went on and on.  "In the end The Mex gave up and handed me his trusty Canon EOS 500D"
Spot reckons the money shot is the air by the white singlet during the Expression Session.  However, the Oldfartsurfer reckons the one red singleted Kelly Slater slotted in a sandy barrel wasn't too bad.  Having just won his 10th World Title the great man went on to win this event, the first of the new year.

Byron, its just not Tassie

(Early morning Byron Bay, not Tassie)
Well Rouge (OFSC No. 45), after the comments you made about Mex and Spots trip to Byron Bay, you'll be pleased to know that the Mexican (OFSC No. 4) and The Dude (OFSC No. 12) got some great cold weather waves at Eaglehawk on Saturday.  Mex wore a Radiator under his 4/3 along with full regalia of boots, gloves and hood and it was still freezing.  The Dude wore his Patagonian yaks wool 8/6 and was warm but had to lay prone the whole time because the suit was too stiff for him to stand up in.  "There was lots of snow on the mountain and a cold south westerly blowing freezing drizzle into our faces as we tried to take off" reports Mex.  Despite the cold, the waves were a nice 3' with some nice long right handers on account of the southerly swell.  Bob the Bobsled managed to get Mex into the barrel but still failed to get him out.  "Its a work in progress" said Mex, I've been tying to get out of a barrel for 40 years now and only manged it once".  Unfortunately Mex had loaned his camera to his niece so there are no photos to prove how cold it was.  So, just for Rouge, we now show a series of photos Mex took on another trip to Byron a couple of weeks ago.
