Mastersurfcraftsman Flips Three Man Board

The Dude (OFSC No 12), also known as the Mastersurfcraftsman has created a new surf vehicle that will take no less than three oldfartsufers on wild rides surfing waves downwind.  "The oldfartsurfers have explored team waves where we can get as many as five oldfartsurfers catching a straighthander at once" said the Dude, "now I'm taking this to a new level where we can get five oldfartsurfers on the same board all catching the same wave at the same time".
Old Farts Surf Co. Head Honcho, The Mexican (OFSC No 4), said "this is taking the company into new realms of possibility, an extension of our line of hollow timber surfboards for big boys"

Expression Session 1 - The Mexican

The fans have been waiting for it and now at last here it is - the final installment from the Old Farts Surf Co. Expression Session 1.  Arguably, the best has been kept for last as Canadian upstart Moose has captured the elegance and aplomb that a true oldfartsurfer on an Old Farts Surf Co. hollow timber board brings to the art of surfing.
(The Mex glides like a sea eagle on his hollow timber board while resting his right elbow on the top of the wave)
This session is memorable as it is the last installment of photos from Moose who will soon return Canuckland.  "The Mex was gliding with the grace of a sea eagle but had the power and spring in his legs like a young gazelle" said Moose.  "It was a priviledge to witness the surf expressions in that session with the Mex firing" she said.
(The Mex with a spring in his leges like a gazelle)
The Dude said "this is what oldfartsurfers do, riding waves for riding the waves sake, with grace and style and purity of purpose."  "No flashy logos around here" said The Other Dude.  "Express yourself" said Madonna.  "Art for art sake, money for god sake" said some old song.
(The Mex glides gracefully allowing the lip of the wave to caress his shoulder while he catches up with the spray of an earlier bottom turn)
Spot put on a pair of fins and overcame his fear of the men in grey suits to swim out to take some water shots.  "I thought the expression and art in thewater were informed by surreal spiritualism" said Spot when he got back to the beach.  "It certainly inspired me to take some great photos" he said.
(Spot's photo of Mex's surfing expression informed by surreal spiritualism)
When the media asked if the Old Farts Surf Co. was going to have another expressions session, Head Honcho, The Mexican said "it will happen when the spirits of the oldfartsurfers aligned with either Mars or Jupiter."  Well Hughey knows when the next age of Aquarius will be but for now we will have to be satisfied with reviewing these wonderful photos taken by Moose with water shots from Spot and the Mex .

Gratuitous Fin Shots of The Craic

The story of The Craic, the fabulous four finned fat fish created by the mastersurfcraftsman, The Dude, and its successful sea trials has proved so popular we've had a request for some fin shots from Rouge (Old Fart Surfer No. 45).  Normally we would only make the special photos available to Registered Oldfartsurfers, however, we couldn't keep this from the world so here it is.  Not only have we got some gratuitous fin shots but we also have a bottom shot for those with the patience to scroll down.

Successful Sea Trials of The Craic Fat Four Finned Fish

You would think that The Dude, mastersurfcraftsman that he is, would have been happy with creating the original Craic, a 6'8" hollow timber three finned fish, but no, now he has created a new Craic.  The new creation, a fat 6' four finned fish made from foam and fibreglass, has been especially created to be Jetstar friendly for his forthcoming trip to Indo in June.  The Dude will be travelling with the Good Woman but they couldn't avoid the dreaded Jetstart who chop boards off at the 6' mark with no argument.
(The Dude prays to Hughey for a good wave before launching the Craic)
Being a mastersurfcraftsman, the obvious solution was to build a board himself with a little assistance from the Other Dude, who is the Old Farts Surf Co. Technical Advisor for Foam and Fibreglass.  The sea trials were carefully planned with The Mexican and the Other Dude on hand for assistance and to hear how it went while the team chewed the fat out the back.
(The Dude does a jig to make Hughey laugh)
The Dude prepared the Craic with wax and laid it on the sand while he prayed to Hughey for a good wave for the sea trials.  Then surprised the crowd gathered on the beach by doing a jig to make Hughey laugh and put him in good humour.
(The Dude gives The Craic a rub to make it feel loved)
As The Craic was placed in the water it was turned over a few times to get it used to salt water, then the Dude gave it a good rub to make it feel good.  "No point riding a board that's not happy" said the Dude.  "Its well known that all boards have personalities and you need to find out what makes them tick before you can have a good surf with them" he said.
(The Dude paddles for the first wave sent by Hughey)
"The first thing I noticed was the buouyancy" said the Dude, "it bobbed around like a cork but it made it easy to paddle".  Of course this was how the Dude intended The Craic to perform.  But the big question was yet to be answered, how would it work when the Dude caught a wave?

(The Dude takes off on the first wave)
No sooner had the Dude got out the back when his prayer was answered and Hughey sent through the wave of the day.  The Dude paddled hard and jumped to his feet, he carved a bottom turn and top turn to position himslef perfectly in the slot.
(The Dude jumps to his feet on the first wave)
"Initially it seemed a bit wobbly but I wasn't used to the fat four finner and I'm really happy with how it handled" said the Dude.
(The Dude takes the first bottom turn on the Craic)
Conditions deteriorated after the first wave and whilst the second wave was ably caught by the Other Dude it just wasn't as big and well shaped as the first one sent to The Dude by Hughey.
(The money shot, The Dude gets the Craic perfectly slotted on its first wave)
The Mexican trialed the Craic and only managed to find a couple of close outs.  "The first take off took me by surprise said the Mex, it was so fast it slipped out from under me" said the Mex.  However, he managed to make the drop and a bottom turn on a couple of waves after that.
(The Dude narrowly avoids getting barrelled on his first wave on the Craic)
(The Dude declares the sea trials a success, "hooray and thanks to Hughey")
(The Other Dude catches the next wave)
(The Other Dude gets some speed off the bottom)
The sea trials were definitely a success and The Craic is likely to be seen as a permanent fixture under the Dude's feet from now on.

Rouge Rumoured to be Traveling South for 7th Round Splinter Group World Surfing Series

(Original Oldfartsurfer Tee No. 45 worn by its proud owner, confessed oldfartsurfer, Rouge.)
There is a rumour floating the surfing world that Original Oldfartsurfer No. 45, Rouge, will be heading south for the seventh round of the World Series Surfing series.  The seventh round is to be a mobile event "somewhere" in the Southern Ocean.  OFSC Head Honcho, Mex, said it would be a boon to the industry to have Rouge at the event, and, I'll even lend him my famous hollow timber surfboard, 'The Mexican', so that he compete."  Mex went on to say that "there is a remote possiblity that if Rouge can make it then Oldfartsurfer No. 66 may also appear."  Who is OFS No. 66?  the mystery will soon be resolved.

The Craic is Christened

The Mastersurfcraftsman, The Dude, has finally named and christened his original 6'8" hollow timber fish "The Craic".  Regular followers of this story will remember that, for the lack of a better name, The Oldfartsurfer had unofficially and without any originality called the board The Dude board after its creator.  "Naming rights go to the creator" said the Oldfartsurfer "and I apologise for the liberties taken in prematurely naming this icon of the surfing world." he went on and on.

(The Dude and The Craic)
In a secret naming cememony, The Craic was offered as one of Huey's children.  Huey threw down a couple of lightning bolts and thundered "Nah - keep it Dude".  The Dude was thankful, telling Huey he promised not to curse him next time he had to wait more than 2 hours for a set.

(Nice bottom - The Craic was nearly named Juanita)
The Young Dude and The Mexican witnessed the ceremony and Huey was omnipresent.  "Its like having a new brother in the family" said Young Dude. "I hope the old fart gives me a crack on The Craic" he said hopefully.  Old Farts Surf Co. Head Honcho, The Mexican, said "this is a historic moment moment in the development of the Old Fart Surf Co. community."

(Beautifully crafted timber fins on The Craic)
The Dude told the legendary story of the creation of The Craic.  The Young Dude, The Mexican and Huey were spellbound as the Dude described every piece of timber glued and shaving taken and how they all came together in perfect harmony as The Craic.  He described "the magic as it took off under his feet on the first ride in 1' slop".

(The classic "crack" in The Craic)
Several pints of Guiness were drunk to honour The Craic and its creator.

The Mexican Tirumphs for Spanish Fans

When the Mexican paddled out for the final of The fourth round of the Splinter Group World Series Surfing Championship he didn't know that members of his ever growing Spanish fan base were in the crowd to cheer him on.  The event was held in a remote secret location on an island a long way from Spain.  "I couldn't believe the effort and expense that the co-Head Honchos of the Spanish Mexican Fan Club, Juan and Juanita, went to to be here and root for me:"  said the Mexican.

(The surf on the final day of the fourth round)
The event was eventually won by the Mexican in controversial circumstances.  Some oldfartsurfer turned up late and absolutely dominated the surfing but all in vain as he wasn't riding the requisite Old Farts Surf Co. Hollow Timber Surfboard hand made by the mastersurfcraftsman, The Dude.  Initially dejected, the old fart was consoled by Juanita.  "I'd do anything to keep this event a joyous occassion just like our festivals in Spain" said Juanita.  "I didn't want anything to spoil the mood on the beach and detract from The Mexican's triumph" she said as she wrapped the dejected old fart within the warm folds of her poncho.  "At least she didn't throw tomoatoes at me" grumbled the old fart.

(The dejected old fart surfer soon to be consoled within the folds of Juanita's poncho)
The final of the event was held in clean conditions and, as has so often been the case, tthe final was a showdown between The Mexican and his Old Farts Surf Co. stable mate, The Dude.  "These guys really are masters of their hollow timber surfboard's" said the visiting Juan.  "They have taken hollow timber surfboard surfing to new levels of performance" he went on.

(Clean conditions for the final)
Juan said "ever since The Dude and The Good Woman came to Spain looking for sites for the Splinter Group to hold their world series surfing competitions we have been saving our Euro's to make the trip to the first event we could get to and see The Mexican surf.  He has been a legend in Spain ever since Cortez conquered the Incas" he said with a smile "and finally I have seen him surf in the flesh".

(Juanita: "psst Juan ... do you think my ass looks big in this poncho"
The visiting fans were surprised by the cool temperature.  "I brought my special Basque bikini to wear for the Mexican"  said a goose bumped Juanita.  "Fortunately I also brought my poncho so I could wear the bikini without getting too cold."  she said faking a coy smile.  "I was so honoured to comfort a dejected old fart surfer.  I wish it was the Mexican but he won and so wasn't dejected and that is far more important to me".

(High performance on finals day)

(Dramatic back drop on the secret island)

(Juan: "Si Juanita it is very cold but the poncho isn't big enough to cover your ass")

In his victory speech The Mexican espoused his theory of "surfing's original roots being in Spain, not Hawaii as often thought, and likened modern day big wave surfers to the early matadors, teasing, ducking and weaving around a lip as if it were a bulls horns".  "The Spanish took surfing to the New World in the Americas and, as Thor Hiedal proved, after leaning to surf from the Spaniards, the indans took surfing to the polynesian islands in huge grass SUPs to escape their conquorers" said the Mex.  The Mexican's Spanish fan base around the world has praised this theory.  "We always knew there was a connection and the Mex has shown us the way" said Juan.

(Juanita: "Si Juan, but do you think Mex will like my poncho")

(Some hot action on finals day)

Soul Arch from the Soul Man

The final of third round of the Old Farts Surf Co. (OFSC) Splinter Group World Surfing Tour took place in grey conditions on various fat peaks up and down the beach.

(Chip off the old block, The Young Dude rides his Old Farts Surf Co. 6'6" Hollow Timber Surfboard hand made by the mastersurfcraftsman, the Dude, in an earlier qualifying round)

OFSC Head Honcho (HH), the Mex, tested the conditions the day before in blue skies and consistent 2'-3' with lefts and righs at the northern end of the beach.  "I surfed myself out in an hour" said the Mex, "got heaps of waves and really got the hollow timber 6'8" gun flying on one two footer, but finally had to seccumb to bowel pressure and head back to the HH thrown"

Finals day had a weird swell, the surf report said you could paddle out with dry hair then spend 10 min getting smashed..  The Dude said "we spied a couple of good waves and paddled out only to wait for 3 hours before realising it was a freak set" .  The finalists - the Dude and the Mex then paddled up and down the beach looking for luck.  "Waves were breaking all around me but there was no defined peak and it was horribly frustrating."

(The Mexican in an earlier qualifying round of the Old Farts Surf Co. Splinter Group World Tour on his prototype 6'8" rounded pin)

Finally a bomb came through and the Dude was in the right spot while the poor Mexicn was paddling out after another disapointing wave.  The Dude eased into the unusually steep take off on his 6'8" hollow timber fish as the wave walled up in front of him.  "I spied the Mex paddling out and new I had to do something really special to win so I laid the fat fish on its rail and arched my back and pulled a massive soul arch bottom turn just before the oldfartsurfer duck dived.  It felt good and I could hear the crowd on the beach hooting.  I think pulling a move like that in front of Mex really demoralised him.  The heat moved up the beach to a left and he made a bit of a come back but the most hoots wins the day"

The Mex was gracious in defeat and said "surfing hollow timber surfboards made by the Dude was the winner today."  "I wish we had some photos of that soul arch to show the fans but its etched in my mind, and nearly my head, forever.  It was just like some old photo of Peter Townend in Hawaii I saw years ago.  The Dude is really the soul man, the heart and soul of hollow timber surfboards and getting them to go" said the HH.

The Dude is the tour leader with two wins.  He had a second round win after Macho man was disqualified for not riding the requisite Old Farts Surf Co. hollow timber surfboard.

Splinter Group Trials Milk Available Swells

The Old Farts Surf Co. World Championship Splinter Group held held its first trials over the weekend, milking swells from the east and south for maximum exposure.   Conditions were pumping but notable absence was The Young Dude for both the east and south coast swells.  According to The Dude  "the Young Dude is seccumbing to wine and wenches" and he had no excuse for missing the east swell on the first day of the trials. The second day perhaps was more forgivable as he hosted an AFL grand final BBQ where he and eight mates filled a recycling wheely bin with empty stubbies, and to his credit managed to go out wenching all night afterwards.  "He's a chip off the old block" said The Dude proudly.
(Weapons of Choice for the Splinter Group)
The Splinter Group didn't miss the Young Dude and hasty arrangements were made to add first substitute, The Other Dude, to the trials.  Although he didn't have the requisite Old Farts Surf Co. Hollow Timber Surfboard, special rule changes were negotiated to allow him to ride a 1975 triple stinger single fin that the Other Dude had faithfully restored with car bog.  "It was my proudest moment", claimed the Other Dude, "to be allowed to participate in the Splinter Group Trials with my trusty spear".

(A solid slab on the outside reef)
While the old farts chewed the fat on an inside reef and entertained a a bus load of Korean tourists by going headfirst over the falls onto the reef just like Bogey and Hepburn in The African Queen, a bunch of brave boogers hit the outside reef.  The lads on foam thought they would be thrown coins by the tourists, but their prone posture made it impossible for them to be noticed in the distance through the rain.

(The brave boogers went unnoticed on the outside reef)

(The Other Dude's tripple stinger single fin)

(Some dudes down the beach)
The weather cut up big time from the south for the second day of the trials and the fat was chewed at the mystical points in the early morning by The Dude and the Mexican.  The Dude's desire to win had overcome his valour and the absence of the Other Dude was due to The Dude letting his tyres down so he couldn't make the event.  But karma prevailed and The Dude was disqualified for not riding the requisite hollow wooden surfboard, even though he took the bombs and chewed the fat with both contestants and non contestants.  The Mex declared it "was the best session ever" on his hollow timber 6'8" hollow timber surfboard which was, ironically, made by The Dude.

Sap Brothers Mix it with The Pros as Splinter Group Makes its Presence Felt

(The Mexican almost lands a tripple air reverse)
The phone call came through from The Young Dude about 9:30 am, parents away he'd had an all night bender at home and was a bit late off the mark. "Hey Mex the coast is on, lets take mum's car for a spin". Half an hour later, the sound of squeeling tyres at the bottom of the street and The Young dude does donuts in the VW as he waits for the Mex to grab his gear.

( The Mex trims the 6'8" hollow timber rounded pin to perfection)

In the back seat is The Yound Dude's Sister (aka the Dude's Daughter), encouraging her brother to fang it harder. "Its only mum's new car and it needs a good hard drive to wear it in" she said as the Mex managed to throw the gear through an open door and grab hold of a roof rack as the Young Dude goes sideways on two wheels.

(The Mexican's 6'8" hollow timber craft trims like an excocet missile)

The Young Dude's 6'6" rounded pin is almost identical to the Mexican's 6'8" making them sap brothers, a unique team within the Splinter Group of world surfing. What the Mex gives away in height to The Young Dude he makes up with an extra couple of inches. Together they mentally dominated the lineup which included some stickered pros. (This pro secretly wants to join the splinter group and his sponsors are rumoured to be in negotiation with the Old Farts Surf Co. to sponsor some of the events. The pro let slip to the Mex in the lineup "I'd rather sit around on a fat peak chewing the fat with the old farts than surf Shippies")

(The Mex pulls off a fat one)
The trip to the coast took 30 min instesad of the usual 60 min. The Young Dude's sister giggled with joy as she clasped her hands over her brothers eyes while he drove the VW at 160 kph and the Mex, still outside hanging on to the roof rack, stuck his foot through the drivers window to steer the car.
(The Mex and a fat one)
The Young Dude Sister proved a deft hand with the camera and has already been appointed official Old Fart Surf Co. photographer by appointment HH (that's the Head Honcho for those of you not up with this blog).
(Beats towing into shippies any day)
The journey home was much more sedate as the Sap Brothers had satiated themselves on fat waves and the pies at the bakery weighed heavily in their gut. A bit of fun was had running a few speed cameras, the carefree crew didn't have a care in the world "mum'll get the fine" said the Young Dude with a devilish grin while his sister gave the cops the sign. "You two are a modern day Bonnie and Clyde" quipped the Mex before falling asleep. (Can't stand up with yer hands over yer head in this one)
